Enlightenment Main

EFL 1.24.2 and Enlightenment 0.24.0 are out – go to our Download page.

Window Manager

Enlightenment started out way back in 1996 as a project to build a Window Manager for X11. It has grown much more since then. Enlightenment still produces this Window Manager, but it has evolved to also cover Mobile, Wearable and TV UI requirements for projects such as Tizen as well as the traditional “desktop” UI. We still push out releases. See our download page for more details on this. Visit our contribute page for our latest source code repositories.

The project is currently transitioning from X11 to Wayland. We are fully committed to moving to Wayland eventually, as its the future of graphical display layers on Linux.

We still primarily support Linux for Enlightenment, but there is some effort (based on help and support from users and some developers) to support BSD too.

Libraries

While developing the Window Manager, a set of libraries was also developed. These libraries are known collectively as EFL. They cover a range of functionality from main-loop, to graphics, scene graphs, networking, widgets, data storage, IPC and much more.

We now are starting to pull in bindings support directly into EFL. We are working on auto-generated bindings for C++, Lua and Javascript (v8/node.js). We hope eventually to pull in our Python bindings too, so we can support as many languages as possible and keep them up to date.

Our primary development environment is Linux, but we make an effort to support BSD as much as possible, as well as macOS and Windows.

Applications

We use our libraries not only to make Enlightenment but other applications for day to day use. We make these applications available for free.

We have included common features such as a terminal emulator, video player, an image viewer, and even the makings of an IDE.

Native Tizen applications are developed using EFL. This is because we’ve focused on remaining lean, yet feature-rich. Unlike many traditional toolkits, EFL is based around a scene graph from the ground up. This allows us to seamlessly switch from software rendering to OpenGL or any other mechanism that can be put in a render engine for Evas the canvas scene graph engine. This also permits layer widgets and objects with alpha channels from the ground up without any special coding tricks.

This is by no means a complete list of applications and more are on the way. We may not have started the traditional way, but are building our library over time. Tizen also has a library of its own.

Thanks to

We run as an open source project. People contribute because they like to or because they are paid. The intent is to release everything under liberal open source licenses with no restrictions on those using such works except the usual “share alike” clauses found in GPLv2 etc.

We also receive other types of contributions. Our community files bug reports, as well as simply providing feedback. Other entities also support us.

This entire website runs on a machine bought with donations from developers and the community. Donations are highly appreciated. We have a non-profit Enlightenment foundation based in France, which acts as custodian of such funds until they’re needed.

This server is hosted at OSUOSL who use their infrastructure to keep many open source projects running.

Our DNS is kindly provided by EasyDNS.

Our SSL certificates are provided by Gandi.net.

Many of our Enlightenment Developer Days events have been sponsored and paid for by Samsung and have recently been hosted by Openwide.

Affiliate Marketing 101: The Beginners Guide to Affiliate Marketing Success

Affiliate Marketing 101: The Beginners Guide to Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is one of the fastest, easiest and affordable ways to start earning an income online. However there is much more to affiliate marketing than signing up and posting your affiliate link. Just like any other work-at-home venture, starting and running an affiliate marketing business requires research and planning.

What is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing involves promoting other companies’ product and services and receiving a commission when one of your referrals buys. One of the first online affiliate programs was Amazon’s Associates program. Amazon understood that people talk about books they like. It also understood that paying someone a small percentage of the sale after a sale is made lowered upfront marketing costs and reduced the overall marketing budget. Other businesses saw the genius of this strategy and decided to use it too.

What are the Pros and Cons of Being an Affiliate Marketer?

For the beginning home-based income wannabe, affiliate marketing offers many perks including:

  • Zero start up costs. While the methods you use to promote your affiliate products may (or may not) cost money, signing up to promote other companies’ products and services is nearly always free.
  • You don’t have to create, inventory, or deliver any product or service. You sell it and get paid, while the company does the work of producing the product/service and getting it to your referral.
  • Quick start up. Many affiliate programs will approve you right away, which means you can be promoting products and services within minutes.
  • It can be a passive income source. Depending on how you promote your affiliate products, it’s possible to create your offer and it can continue to sell for you 24/7.

Like many work-at-home options, there can be some cons to affiliate marketing as well, such as:

  • Depending on the size of your network and level of influence, it can take time to build affiliate marketing income.
  • You need to understand marketing and find ways to find the people who will want and be able to buy your affiliate products.
  • Some affiliate programs require that you meet specific requirements, such as blog traffic size, before they accept you.
  • Many affiliate programs only pay after you meet an earnings threshold. For example, it might not pay until you’ve earned $25.
  • You have to know how to copy and paste code to use affiliate marketing on your website, blog, or funnel.
  • Some affiliate programs have strict rules on how you can promote them. For example, some don’t allow you to use certain keywords in pay-per-click advertising.

How are Affiliate Marketers Paid?

There are a variety of ways affiliate programs pay their affiliates.

  • Pay-per-sale: You earn an affiliate commission when someone you refer buys the product or service you recommended. This may be a percentage of the sale or a flat fee.
  • Pay-per-referral (or lead): You earn a commission when your referral submits their info the company. Many rebate programs, such as Ebates, use this type of program.
  • Pay-per-click: This isn’t seen as much in affiliate market anymore, although contextual add programs such as Google AdSense and Media.net use this method. In pay-per-click, you earn a small amount of money each time some one clicks on your affiliate link.
  • Pay-per-impression: I don’t see this anymore in affiliate marketing, although some advertisers still pay this way. In this method, you earn income each time your link is viewed. You usually earn income based on each 1000 impressions, such as $5 per 1000.

The larger affiliate programs (i.e. Amazon) usually pay through direct deposit or check. Most other affiliate programs pay through PayPal.

When you get paid will depend on the program. Most pay monthly if you meet the threshold. If you don’t meet the threshold, it will continue to calculate your earning and pay you the month following the month you meet the threshold. For example, if you need to earn $100 to get paid and you earn $25 in month one and $75 in month two, you’ll be paid your $100 in month three. Not all programs have a 30 day pay period, but many, if not most, do to cover the cost of any cancellations or returns.

How to Get Started in Affiliate Marketing

  1. Choose quality affiliate products or service to promote. You’ll be judged by the products you offer, so make sure you only offer products and services you feel good about and would buy yourself.
  2. Become an expert on the topic your affiliate products relate to. For people to buy your recommendations, they need to believe and trust that you’re knowledgeable and credible. You can do this website or blog, social media or other forums.
  3. Create a marketing plan. Affiliate marketing is a business, and businesses need to be marketed in order to make money.

Places to Sign Up for Affiliate Programs

Here are some places to check out for affiliate products or services related to your topic or niche:

There are many affiliate programs.

  1. Company Websites: If you have a product or service you recommend, visit the company’s website and look for links that say “affiliate” or “partner with us.”
  2. Amazon Associates – You can promote products from the Amazon store.
  3. ClickBank – Lots of great digital products, but buy the item first to insure it’s good.
  4. Conversant (formally Commission Junction) – Many big-name companies use Conversant to manage their affiliate programs.
  5. eBay Partner Network – Promote products on eBay
  6. LinkShare – Lots of great affiliate products and services.
  7. Shareasale – Lots of great affiliate products and services.

How to Get People to Buy Affiliate Products

Although you don’t need a website or blog to make money through affiliate marketing, most people who make the big bucks have a web presence usually in a specific topic or area. For example, if you’re interest is in cooking, you can have a cooking blog on which you promote cooking utensils, recipe books and other stuff related to cooking.

Here are some ideas to promote your affiliate products:

  • Blogging: Affiliate marketing is just one of many ways to make money on a blog.
  • Email marketing: The most successful affiliate marketers also have an email list.
  • Funnel with Email: This is what I’ve been using a lot over the last year. (Watch for a free report on how I do it coming soon).
  • Social media: Share your blog posts with affiliate links, or share your affiliate links directly.

Ametrine is actually not a single unique mineral – it’s two minerals mixed together! As you might be able to guess from its portmanteau name, these two minerals are amethyst and citrine, which are both forms of quartz.

It is a highly unique blend of these two energies, and the perfect two-in-one stone for the minimalist crystologist!

Ametrine is also known as trystine or bolivianite. The latter of which names is a reference to the fact that almost all ametrine today is mined in the country of Bolivia.

It is possible that the first appearance of ametrine in Europe was when Spanish conquistadors brought it back from Bolivia. Although it is also possible that it simply was not recognized as anything except a mix of amethyst and citrine in Europe until especially impressive pieces were brought back from the Americas.

Ametrine is formed when tiny iron particles locked inside the matrix of the quartz crystals begin to oxidize at different rates.

This is usually due to differences in temperature between the two different parts of the stones.

As you can imagine, this is a very unique and unusual situation to occur in the natural world!

Because of this, when ametrine was first discovered, it was highly prized as a truly unique stone.

However, a stone having different degrees of heat applied to it is a very easy situation to recreate in a lab. Meaning that ametrine is easily and readily made synthetically.

There is nothing wrong with this, and laboratory ametrine has all the same properties as naturally occurring ametrine. As long as it is actually made of irradiated quartz crystals, rather than coloured glass.

The unusual and unique combination of colours in ametrine make it a highly popular jewel for aesthetic purposes. But its magical properties are often understated.

Some people feel that this stone has a “confused” energy because of how it shares the properties of both citrine and amethyst.

However, if you are looking for a combination of these properties, this is the perfect stone for you!

Why Would You Use Ametrine?

Here’s the simple answer: if you want amethyst, and you also want citrine, use ametrine. On the basic level, it really is that straightforward!

However, there are some other facets that make using ametrine more desirable than using separate amethyst and citrine crystals. Besides the cost-efficiency of buying one crystal instead of two!

With the combination of physical citrine and cerebral amethyst, this stone brings together the physical and psychic worlds as no other stone can.

Ametrine is one of the very few imaginable crystals that actually links a stone with a very physical, earthy/fiery energy with one that has a highly spiritual and intellectual energy!

There are other reasons that the combination of amethyst and citrine is positive too. Citrine is a good stone for manifesting desires, but you have to know what you desire before you can manifest it.

That’s where amethyst comes in – it’s a wonderful stone for imagination, expanding the mind, and also for thinking through consequences and results in a logical, organized way.

Combining your amethyst with your citrine in a piece of ametrine will prevent you from falling into the all too common “be careful what you wish for” trap, where you may end up getting what you thought you wanted, without realizing all of the consequences and fallout from that situation.

When paired with Mother of Pearl, this is an excellent stone for dispelling negativity, not in the “magnet” way that stones like shungite “suck up” negative energy, but instead by “clearing the air” of a negative situation.

Amethyst’s power will allow you to effectively evaluate highly emotionally charged situations, while the positive and highly optimistic power of citrine will help keep the tone light while you work through your problems with other people.

Because it’s a combination, and the energies of citrine and amethyst are working in synergy in this stone, this is also an excellent stone for promoting harmony within your life.

If you consider yourself either an “amethyst” or a “citrine” type of personality, this stone will vastly improve your relations with “citrines” or “amethysts” (respectively)!

How Will Ametrine Help You?

Check out my very own book about crystals:

When you have a stone that gives you the power of one of the most important intellectual stones, the power of a highly positive stone that’s known for granting wishes, and the bonus of improved skills in harmony and compatibility, do I even need to go into all the reasons why it can help you?

It practically goes without saying that ametrine’s powers can be applied in virtually every part of your life, from your career to your relationships.

One of the best places to use ametrine is to improve your relationship with your romantic partner.

The natural compatibility of the two minerals that mingle together in this stone will improve your compatibility, and remind you that even when you have points of difference, the two of you come together in order to make a wonderful whole.

Because of amethyst’s problem-solving powers, and citrine’s manifestation powers and symbolic relationship to money, this is also a fantastic stone to incorporate into your business life.

It’s invaluable if you’re striking out on your own in an entrepreneurial venture, but it’s no less helpful when you’re starting a new job, or even just trying to continuously improve at the position you already have.

Ametrine is an excellent stone for releasing blocked energy.

It releases blocked energy from the solar plexus, crown, and third eye chakras, which are the chakras associated with citrine, amethyst, and ametrine as a whole, respectively.

It can also help get you “un-stuck” in general, as the combination of citrine and amethyst promotes lateral thinking and creativity, and can help you come up with unique solutions to problems – both your own, and those of other people!

Problem-solving skills are rare and valuable, and will not serve you poorly in your life.

If you are interested in auric cleansing, this is a great stone to use for that. Its positive spiritual energy can dispel negative energy from your aura, leaving you open to all the positivity that the world has to offer you.

It will also make you just a touch bolder and more willing to accept those opportunities when they come!

How to Use Ametrine for the Best Results

Since it’s such a uniquely beautiful gem, it would be a shame if ametrine wasn’t best used in ways that are highly visible!

Fortunately, the most effective ways to use this gemstone include wearing it as outwardly visible jewellery, like earrings, pendants, or brooches.

By wearing ametrine in a visible place, you are telling the whole world “I’m a versatile person, and willing to try new things!” The combination of citrine and amethyst will subconsciously draw people towards you.

Even if they don’t believe in the powers of these stones on a metaphysical level, it’s undeniable that seeing someone wearing a beautiful purple and yellow stone can elevate your mood and pique your interest.

Ametrine blends masculine and feminine energy – the masculine energy of citrine, and the feminine energy of amethyst.

Because of this, it is a very beneficial stone for sexuality, where a balance of masculine and feminine energies is important. (Remember, “masculine” and “feminine” is not the same as “male” and “female.”

Even in same-sex relationships, an overload of one type of energy is a recipe for trouble!)

If you feel like the energy of your relationship with your partner is unbalanced, place an ametrine stone next to your bed. Its energy will help keep the energy levels equalized, and prevent one form of energy from taking over completely.

Note that this basic principle can also be applied to non-sexual situations – lots of human interactions and relationships rely on an effective balance of masculine and feminine energies!

If you feel that any of your other relationships, personal or professional, have unbalanced energy, ametrine can help you with them as well.

Since ametrine can correspond to three different chakras, it is not ideal to add it to your collection of chakra stones.

You may want to use it in specific situations where the energy of one of its corresponding chakras is either blocked or excessive in a way that relates to one of its other chakras.

The three chakras it rules are the solar plexus chakra, which rules ambition; the third eye chakra, which rules imagination; and the crown chakra, which rules spirituality.

If you feel like one of these chakras is sluggish, and needs some of the energy from one of the other three, place an ametrine stone against the blocked chakra and feel the energy from the healthy chakra pouring into the underactive one.

The Best Combination to Use with Ametrine

Since it is already a combination of two stones (not to mention technically being a form of quartz, adding a whole extra level of energy!), it is not always advisable to blend the energies of ametrine with those of other stones.

You may find that a stone that works well with amethyst clashes with citrine, or vice versa, leading to a generally negative or underwhelming experience.

However, some stones do play well with both citrine and amethyst, and will, therefore, be relatively safe bets for combining with ametrine.

Clear quartz crystal is an obvious one here – this crystal magnifies all types of energy, so if you feel that you need the power of ametrine to be even more powerful than what it is naturally, then using it in conjunction with a clear quartz crystal will be the most effective way to increase its natural energy.

Ametrine can also effectively be used together with a stone that has relatively gentle banishing or anti-negativity properties, such as smoky quartz or red jasper.

These powers can help clear the way for ametrine to do its best work by dispelling any toxic energy that might disrupt it.

However, this is not frequently necessary, as amethyst already has mild cleansing properties due to its ability to help you clearly discern negativity so that you can detach yourself from it.

Overall, it is advisable to be careful with the use of ametrine in combination with other stones or crystals.

While it can certainly be done, and sometimes to very positive effects, the fact that two different energies are already at play makes it a much trickier business than using two individual stones together.

Before choosing stones to use in combination with your ametrine, I recommend spending a significant amount of time “getting to know” your ametrine stone, and becoming comfortable with its unique energy in a practical way, rather than simply a theoretical one.

Once you know how your stone “behaves,” you can feel safer in making decisions about what sort of other energies it might play well with.

Can You Get Ametrine As A Bracelet?

Yes, you can buy Ametrine bracelets. This crystal’s signature shades of yellow and purple will simply take your breath away.

The shifting colors are some of the prettiest that you will see because they change depending on the light and the angle.

For bracelets, Ametrine is often cut in rectangular shapes to equally showcase both colors.

They can also be cut in a way that the colors are blended evenly throughout the stone.

If you’re thinking of buying an Ametrine bracelet, look for bracelets that have sterling silver or 14-carat gold settings.

They make a very beautiful and elegant focal point for bracelets, as well as necklaces, rings, and earrings.

Ametrine is quite an affordable gemstone, so you will have no problems purchasing that dream bracelet you saw online or at the mall.

It is believed that wearing an Ametrine bracelet can remove the energy blockages in your chakras and all the lingering negative energies in your aura and environment.

The healing energies of this stone can replace these impurities, imbalances, and disruptions with pure light.

Ametrine is a true gift because you get two crystals in one.

Each Ametrine bracelet helps you achieve spiritual enlightenment by releasing anything that’s no longer good for you.

The energies of this crystal bring you closer to discovering your inner light!

The Citrine component of Ametrine supports you in remaining light, open, and joyful.

It promotes peace, joy, and happiness and allows you to radiate within yourself.

It does not hold on to negative energy but dispels and transmutes it. Its energy is known to attract prosperity. It’s not called the success stone for nothing!

This stone taps into the solar plexus chakra and strengthens your resolve to remain committed to your goals and decisive about your actions.

The Amethyst component of Ametrine is a stone of contentment, stability, spirituality, peace, and strength.

Like Citrine, it protects whoever wears it from negativity. It also has a powerful soothing effect that will immediately put you at ease during challenging moments of your life.

It works to calm the mind and release the creative blockages so that your thoughts will be stimulated.

This stone also affects the crown chakra so that symptoms of depression can be relieved.

Together in an Ametrine bracelet, they can provide you with the joy, peace, and satisfaction that you need in your life.

It’s the perfect bracelet to add to your jewelry collection if you desire calm, peace, and unity. Ametrine will improve your emotions and enhance your level of creativity.

On a physical level, it will help in eliminating toxins from the body. It’s also believed to help with deafness, eye problems, and dementia.

Mentally, Ametrine brings clarity and harmonizes your actions and perceptions. It boosts your concentration and encourages you to think things through before making a decision.

An Ametrine bracelet will encourage you to explore your possibilities to achieve creative solutions.

Ametrine is a very energetic stone that will support you 100% as you take control of your own life.

My Final Thoughts on the Power of Ametrine

ametrine meaning

Ametrine is a very sensible stone to add to your collection, since it can be used both for the powers of citrine and the powers of amethyst, as well as for its own unique tendencies towards bringing harmony and cooperation.

If you have a limited budget, this is a great option, especially because its synthetic production makes it relatively inexpensive.

It can be a bit of an advanced stone to work with, because of its combination of two different energies, but if you take some time to really become familiar with its energy and vibration, it will serve you very well.

Additionally, even if you don’t take that time, it’s unlikely to do any damage, since amethyst, in particular, has such a positive energy to protect you with.

Have you ever used ametrine or any similar crystal that combines two different types of stone? What were your experiences with it?

Every piece is unique, and every person’s experiences are likely to be different based on the exact types and quantities of mineral present in your individual stone.

Please like and share this post in order to share further information about ametrine with others! This is a relatively little-known stone, which is unfortunate, given its multiple different purposes.

ClickBank Affiliates: The Free Guide

1) How ClickBank Works

2) Operating An Affiliate Account

3) Promoting Products

4) Software Tools For Affiliates

5) More Tips For Affiliates

1. How ClickBank Works

Anyone can join ClickBank as an affiliate – it’s free. When you find a product that you wish to promote, either at a vendor’s website or by searching through the ClickBank Marketplace, you will be given a unique link which you use to bring customers to the product page.

2. Operating An Affiliate Account

2.1. Opening an account

The first thing you need to do is to sign up for a ClickBank account. This information is needed so that ClickBank can send you payments. It’s free to open an account and very simple.

2.2. Getting paid

Payment is sent at pay period end time which is every 2 weeks for cheques. If you are eligible for direct deposit you can receive payment every week. Full details of the ClickBank Paycheck Policy here

3. Promoting Products

Now you are ready to promote ClickBank products and earn commission.

3.1 Choosing the product

To see the complete range visit the ClickBank Marketplace.

The MarketPlace listings are ranked by popularity though you can sort on other factors.

Against each entry is a Promote link which provides you with your affiliate link (hoplink) and shows the rate of commission you receive on selling that item.

You should aim for products with a reasonable rate of commission, no lower than 40% say, to make your efforts worthwhile. Be aware that ClickBank deducts transaction fees from a sale: here is a calculator showing the actual commission paid.

3.2 Check the sales page

Visit the sales page of the product to confirm that the sales copy does a good job of selling the product but even more important that your chances of making a sale are not reduced by the following factors

1. There are many external links which distract the visitor from reaching the order page

2. There are offers to join a mailing list or claim a free report which might mean that the vendor could later follow up these leads but you would not receive commission

3. An overt link to an affiliate sign up page: your potential customer could simply become an affiliate and purchase the product himself

4. The vendor offers multiple payment options so if ClickBank is not chosen you do not get the commission

5. The vendor uses a pop up upon exiting a site to convert a leaving visitor into a sale that does not use ClickBank

If you still want to promote such a product you can advise the vendor to use the ideas in this article How To Stop ClickBank Link Theft

3.3 Check the ClickBank order page

Visit the order page and ensure that your nickname appears in the [affiliate= ] line at the bottom of the order page. If not then you may have incorrectly formatted your link or it’s possible that the affiliate program has been discontinued.

Similarly you should periodically check that your links are working. ClickBank does not have a method to inform affiliates and vendors that links that they set up are not working

3.4 Product Links

There are 3 ways you may wish to link to a product

  • The basic link to a ClickBank item
    http://AFFILIATE.VENDOR.hop.clickbank.net
  • A link to a specific product page, useful when a vendor has multiple products in one ClickBank account. If the vendor is using affiliate management software there should be provision for this. Otherwise see the software tool Affiliate Cloner in section 4.1 below.
  • A link to the order form – so that you can bypass the vendor’s sales page. Details here.

3.5 Commission priority rule

If a customer has visited a sales page on more than one occasion, as a result of following links supplied by different affiliates, the rule is that the last affiliate gets the commission.

3.6 Additional ClickBank links

Here are some further links you can provide to your visitors. Replace AFFILIATE with your nickname to ensure you get the appropriate credit when the links are followed through.

1) ClickBank Signup Form
http://AFFILIATE.reseller.hop.clickbank.net

2) ClickBank Marketplace
http://AFFILIATE.marketplace.hop.clickbank.net

(Note: a more profitable method is to use a ClickBank Storefront in section 4.2 below).

4. Software Tools For Affiliates

4.1 Affiliate Link Cloaking

Affiliate Cloner is a tool which provides solutions to 3 common problems:

1. The great advantage of ClickBank – the ease of signing up as an affiliate for a product – is also a weakness. It is very easy for another to replace your affiliate nickname and claim your commission. Affiliate Cloner can disguise (cloak) your affiliate links.

2. It provides a way to link to an order page (so that you can bypass the vendor’s sales page).

3. It provides a way to link to a specific product page when a vendor has multiple products in one ClickBank account.

Find more about Affiliate Cloner here.

4.2 ClickBank Storefronts

In addition to offering individual products (as shown in section 4.1) you can link to a storefront containing the MarketPlace products – each one encoded with your own affiliate link.

Here is a selection of storefronts.

4.3 Affiliate sales reporting

You can get extensive reports on all your affiliate sales using 3rd party tools here.

4.4 ClickBank Program Selector

You can run keyword searches for programs, and obtain extensive information on commission details and ranking history with these tools.

4.5 Sales Tracking

What is Self Hypnosis?

Learn more about self hypnosis, which is one of the finest tools for self-help that has ever existed.

What is self hypnosis?

As human beings, we are hard-wired for self hypnosis. After all, each and every one of us experiences the state of hypnosis on a daily basis, usually without even knowing it. You pass through the hypnotic state each night when you go to sleep, then again when you wake up. Every time you lose yourself in a good book or spend half the night on Facebook having “just logged on for ten minutes”, you are, in effect, hypnotizing yourself.

Hypnosis is simply a narrowing down of the focus of attention, and this can be directed inwards as well as outwards. We can very easily become entranced by our own thoughts, as you would know if you have ever found yourself reliving, in your mind, something that happened many years ago. Even if we were remarkable enough never to daydream or crave escapist entertainment, we would still experience the hypnotic state, since the ultradian rhythms of our brains dictate that the focus of our attention turns inwards, as the right brain hemisphere assumes dominance every ninety minutes or so.

Self hypnosis then, means taking control of something which is happening anyway, whether we want it to or not. By tapping into this natural state of mind, self hypnosis allows us to easily accept, newer, better, more beneficial ideas and suggestions for personal improvement. This makes self hypnosis extremely empowering – and why we believe that it is one of the finest tools for self-help that has ever existed.

Is self hypnosis the same as meditation?

Self hypnosis is closely linked to meditation, which has a much longer and richer history than Western psychology. The difference between self hypnosis and meditation is really one of intent. Exactly the same things happen physically, but meditation is usually aimed more at stilling the mind, whereas self hypnosis is more usually aimed at directing the mind towards a specific end or goal.

What can be achieved with self hypnosis?

Self hypnosis can be used to boost self-confidence, solve problems, make decisions and become more successful (whatever success means to you), improve concentration and memory, promote rapid healing, improve your sex life, and much more. It is only necessary to know exactly what you are seeking to achieve – and self hypnosis can then help you achieve it.

Everything that we decide we want to do is most definitely affected by our attitude and our belief about our chances of succeeding. Of course, there are limitations as to what we can do with hypnosis, so we are talking here about things which are possible. Self hypnosis cannot perform miracles. Impossibilities remain impossibilities. Improbabilities, on the other hand, become far less improbable.

Whatever you are seeking to achieve with self hypnosis must be both plausible and possible. For example, seeking to become a world-class athlete would be somewhat pointless, if you are already aged around forty with a “dodgy” knee. However, you could still aim at becoming a world-class athletics promoter. That really illustrates the criteria for self-help using self hypnosis. Make quite certain that what you are seeking to achieve is possible, but do not worry about it being improbable.

Does self hypnosis require a hypnotherapist?

As the name implies, self hypnosis is a way of creating the hypnotic state for ourselves, without the aid of a hypnotherapist. Doing self hypnosis in this way means you act as your own guide, narrowing down your focus of attention and turning it inwards for specific purposes. The difficulty with inducing hypnosis by yourself is recognizing you have entered the state of hypnosis!

This type of self hypnosis is safe and simple, and can sometimes be nearly as effective as hetero hypnosis – which is when you are hypnotized by somebody else. Although, it is an undisputed fact that almost everybody can go into a deeper state of hypnosis with hetero-hypnosis than they will with “true” self hypnosis.

We mentioned “true” self hypnosis, because technically speaking, listening to our hypnosis CD’s or MP3s also counts as self hypnosis, since a hypnotherapist is not there in the room with you. A more appropriate label for what we provide would be “guided self hypnosis.” As you browse through our website, you will notice that we frequently describe our audio programs as “self hypnosis sessions”, but strictly speaking they are actually “guided self hypnosis sessions.” In all other important respects, they are the same as a formal hypnotherapy session.

Listening to guided self hypnosis recordings has obvious advantages, because they can be used to address almost all of those issues for which you might seek help from a hypnotherapist, in person. When you listen to our self hypnosis sessions, you benefit from our many years of expertise, not only in helping to induce the state of hypnosis, but with the all important therapeutic part of the equation. Professional self hypnosis sessions developed by experienced hypnotherapists, like us, are a safe, natural, quick and highly effective method of producing lasting and profound change.

How do your self-hypnosis recordings work?

Each self hypnosis recording begins with you being asked to take a few deep breaths and to then follow along with a technique called progressive relaxation. Relaxing music is included, along with some pleasant imagery to bring about a deeply relaxed state of body and mind. This whole process is called the “hypnotic induction” and over the years we have perfected this phase of our self hypnosis recordings to make it as effective as possible.

This style of self hypnosis is hypnosis at its best and most pleasant, for it produces wonderful feelings of laziness and relaxation coupled with an alertness of concentration that has to be felt to be believed. Once you reach the therapeutic stage of one of our self hypnosis recordings, you will feel comfortable enough to go on a journey of imagery and positive suggestion. It is during this part of a self hypnosis session where the “change work” can really begin.

There are no magic words or spells, because that is not how hypnosis works. Instead, we use a range of advanced hypnotherapy techniques, which vary, depending upon the particular recording(s) you have chosen. Each self hypnosis CD / MP3 download is carefully constructed by our team of highly experienced hypnotherapists to achieve the best possible results for you. All you need to do, is to relax and enjoy the process.

Are your self-hypnosis CD’s and MP3 downloads guaranteed to work?

Sadly, hypnosis is not a miracle cure for anything and it would be wrong of us to suggest that our CD’s and MP3 downloads will always work for every individual. There are no magic words we can use within our hypnotherapy recordings that will work for absolutely everybody, every single time.

However, what we can say is that the techniques we use have been developed by our team of hugely experienced hypnotherapists, who have over 70 years of combined experience in the field of hypnotherapy. We know that our audio programs have helped thousands of people to achieve positive outcomes, and as such, we believe that regularly listening to our self hypnosis CD’s and MP3 downloads can improve your chances of gaining similar results.

To get maximum benefit from our self hypnosis CD’s and MP3 downloads, motivation and commitment on your behalf is required. Perhaps the most important element of all, is to be open to the effects of self hypnosis. There is a theory that all hypnosis is self hypnosis, because hypnosis requires a willing participant. We strongly support this viewpoint.

The True Meaning of Self-Awareness (& How to Tell If You’re Actually Self-Aware)

Self-awareness is a critical tool to help you reach higher levels of job satisfaction, become a better leader, improve relationships with colleagues, and manage your emotions better. It’s also positively correlated with higher levels of overall happiness.

And yet, as one study estimates, only 10-15% of people are truly self-aware.

Luckily, self-awareness can be practiced and cultivated — it’s not a fixed trait.→ Click here to download leadership lessons from HubSpot founder, Dharmesh Shah [Free Guide].

If you begin to consciously practice self-awareness, you can evaluate how your values, passions, and goals fit into your current environment and emotions — and how to align them better. You can also understand how other people view you, creating stronger, more authentic relationships with colleagues.

Self-awareness will help you become a happier and more productive employee and leader, and can help you align your current life with your passions.

Here, we’ll explore what self-awareness truly means, how to tell if you’re self-aware, and, best of all, how to improve your own self-awareness, right now.

If you’re still unconvinced that self-awareness is a valuable trait to cultivate, here’s a list of general benefits of being self-aware.

Benefits of self-awareness

  1. Improve skills by recognizing what you do well and what you need to improve
  2. Raise happiness levels by aligning your ideals with your actions
  3. Become a better leader by understanding how employees perceive your behavior
  4. Strengthen work and personal relationships by managing emotions
  5. Increase work motivation by seeking out your true passions
  6. Decrease stress by identifying emotions and lessening tasks you don’t enjoy

What is self-awareness?

Self-awareness was first defined by Shelley Duval and Robert Wicklund (1972), who proposed that, at a given moment, people can focus attention on the self or on the external environment.

Duval and Wicklund noted, “When we focus our attention on ourselves, we evaluate and compare our current behavior to our internal standards and values. We become self-conscious as objective evaluators of ourselves.”

In other words, when you focus on yourself, rather than your environment, you compare yourself with your standards of correctness. These standards of correctness specify how you ought to think, feel, and behave. They are, essentially, your values and beliefs, otherwise known as your ideals.

You feel pride or dissatisfaction depending on how well your behavior matches up with your standards of correctness. If you’re dissatisfied, you might make changes to your behavior to better align with your standards. For instance, you might note feelings of discontent in your current role, and recognize you value creativity but don’t have the opportunity to exercise that passion. That dissatisfaction could lead you to pursue other creative outlets, changing your behavior to fit your standards.

Self-awareness, then, is a fundamental tool for self-control.

Make sense? One more thing.

Tasha Eurich, a researcher and organizational psychologist, and her team of researchers came up with two categories of self-awareness, which I think are important to note: internal self-awareness, and external self-awareness.

Internal self-awareness is something I’ve already mentioned — it is how clearly you see your values, passions, and aspirations, and how well those standards fit with your environment and your reactions (which include thoughts, feelings, behaviors, strengths, and weaknesses).

Essentially, internal self-awareness is recognizing your current job doesn’t match your true passion for marketing, or feeling dissatisfied with a heated conversation you had with your colleague, which conflicts with your belief that kindness is important.

External self-awareness, on the other hand, is the ability to clearly see how other people view you. People who know how others see them are typically more empathetic. Leaders who can see how their employees view them are usually more effective, and have stronger relationships with their employees.

External self-awareness is recognizing your employee took your feedback personally because of your tone, or realizing your employees are disheartened by the data provided in your last email.

The definition of self-awareness

Self-awareness is the ability to focus on yourself and how your actions, thoughts, or emotions do or don’t align with your internal standards. If you’re highly self-aware, you can objectively evaluate yourself, manage your emotions, align your behavior with your values, and understand correctly how others perceive you.

Self-awareness test

Okay, so we’ve covered what self-awareness is, and why it’s important. Now, how are you supposed to know if you’re as self-aware as you should be?

The iNLP Center self awareness test is a quick, free online test to measure your self-awareness. Although it’s not a scientific or clinical assessment, the test was created by Mike Bundrant, who has 25 years experience as a counselor, NLP trainer (Neuro-linguistic programming, which is an approach to communication, personal development, and psychotherapy), and life coach. The test, made up of 12 multiple-choice questions, provides you with a score and interpretation of your level of self-awareness, and which areas you should focus on improving.

Additionally, consider taking a basic personality test: the results might contradict with how you view yourself, encouraging you to re-evaluate your true strengths and weaknesses.

There are other, non-standardized test ways to measure your self-awareness, too:

First, you could apply feedback analysis to your own life whenever you make important decisions. For instance, you might write down why you chose to switch departments at work, including your motivations, thoughts during the decision-making process, and what you expected would happen as a result. Then, a couple months later, check back in with your notes — what’s gone according to plan, what were you wrong about, etc.? This can provide you with a deeper understanding of how you make decisions and how you can improve the process, as well as what motivates you.

Or, write down a list of what you perceive to be your strengths and weaknesses. When you’re finished, check with someone you trust to give honest feedback: are you missing any strengths or weaknesses, or do other people perceive you differently?

Ideally, over time, you’ll use various methods to slowly gain a deeper understanding of who you are, what you want, and how those things overlap or conflict with how you behave, think, and feel.

How to become more self-aware

Once you’ve discovered how self-aware you are, you’re probably wondering how you can get better at it.

There are dozens of ways to improve and cultivate self-awareness, but here are four of the biggest to start you off.

1. Ask “What?” instead of “Why?”

When people assess their current state, emotions, and environment, they all too often ask, “Why?” Like, “Why am I feeling so sad? Why did my boss give me that feedback? Why isn’t my project going the way I’d hoped?”

Here’s why asking “Why?” is ineffective: research has shown you don’t have access to a lot of your unconscious thoughts, feelings, and motives. Odds are, you’re wrong about why you act, do, or think certain things. For instance, you might hear harsh feedback from a boss, and rationale it’s because you’re not cut out for the job, or harp on your insecurities — it’s hard for you to unbiasedly evaluate your strengths and weaknesses and come to a correct conclusion.

Plus, you don’t often factor physiological responses into the equation when you’re trying to understand your behavior. For instance, maybe you lost your temper at your employee because of low blood sugar or lack of sleep, not because you’re an unfit leader.

Research has also found people who are introspective are more likely to ruminate on negative thoughts when evaluating the self. Self-evaluation through “Why” questions could leave you feeling depressed and anxious, while being entirely unproductive.

Rather than asking “Why,” highly self-aware people ask, “What?” “What” questions are more productive, and focuses on objectives and future goals, rather than past mistakes.

For instance, let’s say you’re feeling frustrated at work. “Why am I feeling awful?” will likely only leave you feeling more depressed, forcing you to ruminate on negatives. On the other hand, “What are the situations at work making me feel bad?” guides you to recognizing factors outside your control that don’t align with your passions or goals, and helps you strategize how to fix those situations.

2. Spend Time With Yourself

It’s not easy to reflect on yourself when you’ve got the TV blaring, you’re out to dinner with friends, or you’re glued to your phone.

Give yourself the space and time necessary to self-reflect, by avoiding distractions. Try spending time reading, writing, meditating, or practicing other solo activities to connect with yourself.

Try to give yourself 30 quiet, distraction-free minutes a day.

3. Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness allows you to be present with yourself and observe your thoughts in a non-judgmental way. What better way to become self-aware than focusing, nonjudgmentally, on you?

Mindfulness forces you to focus on yourself on purpose, in the present moment. Next time you’re feeling frustrated at work, use mindfulness to check-in with yourself: what thoughts are going through your mind? How are you feeling? Simply being present enough to acknowledge your thoughts, feelings, and emotions, will help you become more acquainted and better at recognizing them properly within yourself.

Take a look at these Mindfulness apps if you need help getting started.

4. Become a Better Listener, and Ask for Feedback

When you learn how to listen to your friends, colleagues, and managers without evaluating or judging them, you’ll become more empathetic and understand people better. Listening, by the way, isn’t the same as hearing — like mindfulness, the practice of listening takes purpose and control. Listening to the important people in your life should give you a true sense of how they perceive you.

You can translate those listening skills to yourself, too, and become better at understanding your own thoughts and emotions. Listening to others and yourself is critical to becoming self-aware.

Additionally, it’s important to ask for feedback from the people you work with, or lead. It’s impossible to have true, complete self-awareness, if you only turn inwards — gaining different perspectives on who you are will help you see a truer, more complete picture.

Un’Goro power crystal varieties

Power crystals can be used for various things

Historical uses

A human male wearing the Thorium armor set.

Prior to patch 3.1.0, the Thorium armor set required various power crystals in its construction and provided extra resistance to all magic types.

Since patch 3.1.0, this set has lost its resistance and requires no crystals.

Prior to patch 4.0.3a, you could turn in 7 of each crystal to be studied by J.D. Collie in N [52] Crystals of Power.

Crystal pylons

To operate the pylons you are given  [Crystal Pylon User’s Manual].

Depending on which power crystals are combined, the pylons will provide quests that reward different crystal which can be consumed for an effect. Each quest reward 6 crystals when completed.

Northern Crystal Pylon

[Crystal Charge] (Inflicts 383 to 517 fire damage to targets in a 3 yard radius.)

[Crystal Restore] (Heals the target of 670 damage over 15 sec.)

This crystal is an objective of A [57] Fragments of the Past.

Eastern Crystal Pylon

[Crystal Force] (Increases the target’s Spirit by 30 for 30 min. Guardian Elixir.)

This crystal is an objective of N [55] Libram of Voracity.

[Crystal Spire] (A crystal shield surrounds the friendly target, doing 12 damage to anyone who hits her. Lasts 10 min)

This crystal is an objective of N [55] Libram of Resilience.

Western Crystal Pylon

[Crystal Ward] (Increases the target’s Armor by 200 for 30 min. Guardian Elixir.)

This crystal is an objective of N [55] Libram of Tenacity.

[Crystal Yield] (Decreases an enemy target’s Armor by 200 for 2 min.)

Notes

  • A major plot element in Land of the Lost are the pylons, devices of unknown origin which open portals through space, time, and dimensions. They are powered and controlled through consoles comprised of patterns of red, green, blue, and yellow crystals.
  • It may be significant that there are no silithid hives near the pylons except in the south, where a southern pylon is mysteriously absent.

The Power Crystals of Un’Goro

Icon-RPG.pngThis section contains information from the Warcraft RPG which is considered non-canon.

Excerpt from “The Power Crystals of Un’Goro” by J.D. Collie[1]

Amid the rocks and rich soil of the crater floor can be found all manner of colorful crystals, each as fragile as glass. Held to a light, they seem to flicker and glow like flames… They seem to have no useful purpose, or so I believed at first, until I found the first Crystal Pylon. Located in the east, guarded by the pterrodax, this humming pillar holds the same sort of runes found on the Stone Guardians as well as the hovering pylons that guard the entrance to the crater. All my attempts to decipher this ancient tongue have met with failure. And yet — the pictographs clearly show power crystals being used for something. A ritual, a spell, I do not yet know…

Although the crystals come in all shapes and sizes, I have classified them in four main colors: red, blue, green and yellow. I’ve never found anything truly in between these shades, so there are no orange or brown ones, for example. Anyone who isn’t color-blind can tell them apart by a glance. What’s more, I’m fairly certain the crystals can be employed by the Crystal Pylons. If I could figure out the right pattern — but how? How?

Much later in the text.

I’ve done it! I found one of the patterns! Or at least I’m pretty sure I have. I need to make another trip to the western Crystal Pylon to see. If this works, the crystals I’ve collected should coalesce into a single mega-crystal infused with the combined powers of all the shards! I can’t wait to report on the results when I get back!

The text ends.

Northrend

Map of the pillarsSholazar Basin pillars

Sholazar Basin

In the Sholazar Basin, there are some strange devices on top of several pillars, on these pillars grow crystals which resemble the ones in the Un’Goro Crater. Their purpose is yet unknown, but the power of the pillars is readily apparent.

List of pillars:

The Cult of the Damned has been shown responsible for the destruction of the Lifeblood Pillar, and is also active on top of the Glimmering Pillar.

Conservatory of Life

Conservatory of Life

There are three pylons located at the Conservatory of Life inside Ulduar, their purpose is yet unknown. It should be noted that they are unlike the pylons in the Un’Goro Crater which all share the same coloured crystal.

Mastery of the Crystals

Container where the crystals are located.

During the quest N [78 Daily] Mastery of the Crystals, Lightningcaller Soo-met gets the player to use crystals to defend the gorloc faction, the Oracles. They may be in connection with the Sholazar Basin power crystals. The crystals are gotten out of a chest.

What Is Content Marketing?

You’ve just heard someone mention “content marketing” and you get the idea you should already know what it is, but you’re too embarrassed to ask anyone. Congratulations, this post is for you.

The Content Marketing Institute, an online resource for information on all things content marketing related, defines content marketing thusly:

Content marketing is a marketing technique of creating and distributing valuable, relevant and consistent content to attract and acquire a clearly defined audience – with the objective of driving profitable customer action.

The key word here is “valuable.” It’s what changes this definition from one that could describe almost any form of advertising or marketing. You can tell if a piece of content is the sort that could be part of a content marketing campaign if people seek it out, if people want to consume it, rather than avoiding it. So was VW’s 2014 “Game Day” commercial, which has been viewed on YouTube almost 18 million times as of the writing of this post, an ad, or content marketing? The answer is it’s both, depending on how it’s received by each individual who is exposed to it. The same will apply to any piece of content marketing you create, depending on whether the recipient received value from it or not. Of course the goal is to provide as much value from your content marketing to as much of your target audience as possible. At this point, despite this definition and explanation, you’re probably still wondering what exactly content marketing is. We can get more clarity by considering a few examples.

Five Content Marketing Examples

There are as many types of content marketing as there are types of content–far too many to cover here. My intent is to give you an introduction to content marketing and get you thinking like a content marketer so you’ll see the opportunities all around you. Soon you’ll be coming up with 50 content marketing ideas every day. You won’t be able to stop seeing opportunities to create content. Here are five examples to help your mind start percolating.

  1. Infographics. These are generally long, vertical graphics that include statistics, charts, graphs, and other information. If you need some examples, here are 197 infographics on the topic of content marketing curated by Michael Schmitz, head of Content Lab at Publicis, Munich. Infographics can be effective in that if one is good it can be passed around social media and posted on websites for years. You can get a professionally designed infographic by hiring a contractor on a site like oDesk or if you want to remove some of the risk you can go with a company like Visua.ly. A decent infographic will usually cost you at least $1,000 to have designed, but can cost several thousand dollars if you are hiring a contractor or agency to include strategy and planning, research, copywriting, and design. There is also the matter of promoting that infographic to bloggers and the media. Or you could set up a board on Pinterest and curate infographics on a topic related to your business. That is also a form of content marketing, and it costs nothing but your time. Hey, it worked for Michael.
  2. Webpages. What’s the difference between a normal webpage and a webpage that is content marketing? Consider The Beginner’s Guide to SEO from Moz, a provider of SEO related tools and resources. This resource, offered for free, has been viewed millions of times, bringing in countless customers who otherwise might never have stumbled across Moz and the services they offer. Or take a look at a case study from the design firm Teehan+Lax. Most case studies are boring. Their case studies are fascinating. That’s the difference between simply putting content on your website, and content marketing.
  3. Podcasts. Michael Hyatt, author of the best-selling book Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World, practices what he preaches. His “This is Your Life” podcast is downloaded 250,000 times each month. As Hyatt elaborates on his blog post 4 Reasons You Should Consider Launching Your Own Podcast, “A podcast gives you visibility in a completely different world—primarily iTunes. I have had scores of new people say they had never heard of me until they stumbled onto me in iTunes.” Hyatt gives valuable information and advice in his podcast–all for free. But that podcast leads to more sales of his books, signups for his courses, and requests for him as a speaker.
  4. Videos. Gary Vaynerchuk is a master of content marketing using online video, just take a look at his YouTube channel. He got his start creating videos to promote his family’s wine store and through those videos and other online marketing he eventually grew it to a $45M empire. Videos and podcasts are a largely untapped form of content marketing because people think it’s expensive and hard. But with the falling cost of professional grade equipment creating high quality video and audio content is easier than ever. Amateur video content marketing has been used to sell blenders, launch new dental products, and market Hong Kong visa consulting services. What video could you throw together for your company that might change your fortunes overnight? It might be easier than you think.
  5. Books. Like movies, people often think of books as selling themselves, but savvy marketers don’t sell books just to sell books, they sell books as marketing tools. Michael Port’s sales manual Book Yourself Solid is a great read for entrepreneurs, salespeople, and marketers, and while I’m sure Port enjoys selling his book, the book is a tool for driving customers to his coaching and speaking services. Although with self-publishing it’s easier than ever to publish a book, there is still the perception that it’s difficult and that only reputable professionals can publish a business book. Publish your own, and even if people don’t read it you can still use it as a form of content marketing every time you’re introduced as “Author of…”

Those are just a few examples of content marketing. I could also have mentioned white papers, ebooks, apps, public speaking, presentations, and blogs. Entire books have been written on using each of these in content marketing efforts.

Why Content Marketing?

Perhaps more important than understand what content marketing is, is understanding why content marketing is important to your business. First we need to understand the four steps of the buying cycle:

  1. Awareness. Prior to awareness a customer may have a need, but they are not aware there is a solution.
  2. Research. Once a customer is aware there is a solution, they will perform research to educate themselves. For example, a car buyer will try to find out what different types of cars exist, and which one will fit their needs.
  3. Consideration. At this point the customer starts comparing different products from different vendors to make sure they’re getting a high quality product at a fair price.
  4. Buy. Finally, the customer makes their decision and moves forward with the transaction.

Traditional advertising and marketing is great when it comes to the second two steps. Content marketing taps into the first two stages of the buying process by raising awareness of solutions and educating consumers about a product they may have never considered before.

At my own company we’ve used content marketing to grow more than 1,000% over the past year. Potential clients find our content, find value in it, and by the time they contact us they’re already convinced they want to work with us. We don’t have to engage in any high pressure sales tactics, it’s merely a matter of working out details, signing an agreement, and getting started. The trust that usually needs to be built up during an extensive sales cycle has already been created before we know the potential client exists.

The return on investment for content marketing can be phenomenal if executed correctly. We haven’t spent a dime on our own content marketing, or even that much time. 95% of the success we’ve experienced with content marketing can be traced to a handful of articles I’ve written, adding up to perhaps 20 hours of work.

Content marketing also provides additional benefits in that it supports other digital marketing channels. It provides additional content for social media marketing and contributes to SEO efforts by generating natural inbound links and building up good content on your website that gets found in search engines. In fact, for many companies the bulk of their SEO efforts should be focused on content marketing.

How Do I Get Started?

There are many firms that offer content marketing services, often paired with SEO or PR. If you’re simply too busy to do it yourself and aren’t ready to manage it in-house, then hiring a firm may be your best option. But if you want to jump in and do your own content marketing the easiest way is to start blogging. It will likely be hard at first, but the more you do it, the better you’ll get at it. Following tips from websites like Copyblogger you’ll quickly learn how to craft content for your website or blog that will engage readers and turn them into customers or clients. But while technically good writing and the right headlines can help, it’s not the key to creating great content that is the best form of content marketing.

Great Content

If you’ve ever slogged your way through reading a piece of marketing and only finished reading because you had to, then you’ve experienced bad content marketing. When I speak to companies about content marketing I tell them that content is good if they genuinely want to read it. Content is great if they’re willing to pay to read it. If you want to see great examples of content, just look at what you’ve paid to read, watch, or listen to lately. If you watched The Lego Movie this year, you saw one of the greatest examples of content marketing to date. Oh, you thought they made that movie in order to sell movie tickets? Think again. That was a 100 minute toy commercial, and rather than using a DVR to skip it you paid good money to watch it. Is it any coincidence that Lego recently leapfrogged Mattel, the creators of Barbie, to become the largest toy company in the world? You may not have the budget to make a feature film to promote your company, but you can still give potential customers valuable information.

The #1 Secret of Content Marketing

Add value. That’s the secret. It’s not really a secret at all. We’ve already talked about it throughout this piece. Although when you look at some of the marketing companies engage in you wonder if they’re purposely avoiding the obvious. We skip advertising when it provides little to no value. If you want to learn about advertising that doesn’t get skipped, find a skateboarder and ask him if you can watch him look through a skateboard magazine. You’ll see that he spends as much time looking at the ads as he does looking at the articles and photos. Or check out The Berrics website. Much of the content is advertisements, but skaters don’t skip these videos, they watch them just like they watch the other videos, because they’re getting the value they want–good skating. As a skater I’d like to say skateboard companies pioneered content marketing decades ago, but I know they were only doing what came naturally, and selling more product was secondary to the fun of creating videos and magazines. If you want to hire someone onto your marketing team who understands content marketing intuitively, hiring a skateboarder might not be a bad step.

If you’re not sure how you can add value through content marketing, ask your existing customers what kind of content you can produce that would be helpful to them now, or would have been helpful to them when they were looking for your product or service. They’ll tell you.

How Can I Learn More?

Read Joe Pulizzi’s excellent book Epic Content Marketing. I started reading it after I wrote this post and it confirmed and expanded what I already knew about content marketing, with much more detail than I could ever go into here. Something Pulizzi emphasizes which I originally left out was the importance of focusing on producing mobile-friendly content, since smartphones are becoming the dominant way in which most of our customers access content. Also read Michael Hyatt’s Platform, mentioned above. Frequent websites like those of Content Marketing Institute, Ragan, Copyblogger, Michael Hyatt, and Gary Vaynerchuk and sign up for their email newsletters. It won’t take you long to become not just familiar with content marketing, but an expert.

Most companies are not doing real content marketing…yet. That’s why you’ll have an advantage if you jump in. Let me know how it goes.

Self-Awareness: How It Develops and Why It Matters

Self-awareness involves being aware of different aspects of the self including traits, behaviors, and feelings. Essentially, it is a psychological state in which oneself becomes the focus of attention.

Self-awareness is one of the first components of the self-concept to emerge. While self-awareness is something that is central to who you are, it is not something that you are acutely focused on at every moment of every day. Instead, self-awareness becomes woven into the fabric of who you are and emerges at different points depending on the situation and your personality.

People are not born completely self-aware. Yet research has also found that infants do have a rudimentary sense of self-awareness. Infants possess the awareness that they are a separate being from others, which is evidenced by behaviors such as the rooting reflex in which an infant searches for a nipple when something brushes against his or her face. Researchers have also found that even newborns are able to differentiate between self- and non-self touch.

Studies have demonstrated that a more complex sense of the awareness of the self begins to emerge at around one year of age and becomes much more developed by approximately 18 months of age.

Researchers Lewis and Brooks-Gunn performed studies looking at how self-awareness develops. The researchers applied a red dot to an infant’s nose and then held the child up to a mirror. Children who recognized themselves in the mirror would reach for their own noses rather than the reflection in the mirror, which indicated that they had at least some level of self-awareness.

Lewis and Brooks-Gunn found that almost no children under one year of age would reach for their own nose rather than the reflection in the mirror. About 25 percent of the infants between 15 and 18 months reached for their own noses while about 70 percent of those between 21 and 24 months did so.

It is important to note that the Lewis and Brooks-Gunn study only indicates an infant’s visual self-awareness; children might actually possess other forms of self-awareness even at this early point in life. For example, researchers Lewis, Sullivan, Stanger, and Weiss suggested that expressing emotions involves self-awareness as well as an ability to think about oneself in relation to other people.

Researchers have proposed that an area of the brain known as the anterior cingulate cortex located in the frontal lobe region plays an important role in developing self-awareness. Studies have also used brain imaging to show that this region becomes activated in adults who are self-aware. The Lewis and Brooks-Gunn experiment suggests that self-awareness begins to emerge in children around the age of 18 months, an age that coincides with the rapid growth of spindle cells in the anterior cingulate cortex.

However, one study found that a patient retained self-awareness even with extensive damage to areas of the brain including the insula and the anterior cingulate cortex. This suggests that these areas of the brain are not required for most aspects of self-awareness and that awareness may instead arise from interactions distributed among brain networks.

So how exactly do children become aware of themselves as separate beings? Researchers suggest that children progress through a series of levels of self-awareness between birth and approximately age 4 or 5. Self-awareness is observed by how children respond to their own reflection in a mirror.

Psychologists often break self-awareness down into two different types, either public or private.

This type emerges when people are aware of how they appear to others. Public self-awareness often emerges in situations when people are at the center of attention, such as when giving a presentation or talking to a group of friends.

This type of self-awareness often compels people to adhere to social norms. When we are aware that we are being watched and evaluated, we often try to behave in ways that are socially acceptable and desirable.

Public self-awareness can also lead to evaluation anxiety in which people become distressed, anxious, or worried about how they are perceived by others.

This type happens when people become aware of some aspects of themselves, but only in a private way.

For example, seeing your face in the mirror is a type of private self-awareness. Feeling your stomach lurch when you realize you forgot to study for an important test or feeling your heart flutter when you see someone you are attracted to are also examples of private self-awareness.

Sometimes, people can become overly self-aware and veer into what is known as self-consciousness.

Have you ever felt like everyone was watching you, judging your actions, and waiting to see what you will do next? This heightened state of self-awareness can leave you feeling awkward and nervous in some instances.

In a lot of cases, these feelings of self-consciousness are only temporary and arise in situations when we are “in the spotlight.” For some people, however, excessive self-consciousness can reflect a chronic condition such as social anxiety disorder.

People who are privately self-conscious have a higher level of private self-awareness, which can be both a good and bad thing. These people tend to be more aware of their feelings and beliefs, and are therefore more likely to stick to their personal values. However, they are also more likely to suffer from negative health consequences such as increased stress and anxiety.

People who are publicly self-conscious have a higher level of public self-awareness. They tend to think more about how other people view them and are often concerned that other people might be judging them based on their looks or their actions. As a result, these individuals tend to stick to group norms and try to avoid situations in which they might look bad or feel embarrassed.

Self-awareness plays a critical role in how we understand ourselves and how we relate to others and the world. Being self-aware allows you to evaluate yourself in relation to others. For people who have an extremely high sense of self-awareness, excessive self-consciousness can result. If you feel that you are struggling with a self-consciousness that is having a negative influence on your life, discuss your symptoms with your doctor to learn more about what you can do to cope with these feelings.
